Greece inspires visions of ancient ruins, idyllic islands, great food and wines and an ancient culture that still inspires. Many Europeans and many others arrive every year to experience this place.
Up to a third of this country is mountainous and sparsely inhabited while there are also sunny beaches and ancient history to explore.
The islands are still a favourite place to visit. Travel them via the linked ferries or take a long charter cruise, another way to explore these playgrounds.
Athens is well worth visiting. In Ancient history, the city state shone during the Classical Period 4th and 5th Centuries B.C.
Athens has historical roots that dates back to ancient Greece. There were other important city states, particularly during the 4th and 5th century BC that that did not survive as well.
Even today, Athens is the major centre for Greek politics and business. After all, it has been here for more than 7000 years.

Outside of Athens, one quickly experiences a changing and diverse landscape. Mountains, fields and along the long coastline, sleepy fishing villages and sandy beaches.
Offering wonderful scenery, Northern Greece has a long cultural heritage. Alexander the Great was born here at Pella. Much Byzantean architecture, art and monuments remain here as well.
Mount Olympos, located here, is a natural attraction and the highest mountain in the country. It also forms a group of mountains now under the protection of a National Park.
Walkers and Trekkers will find this a great place to visit, the trails here offer fantastic scenery and biodiversity. The park's wildlife includes deer and boars, there have also been over seventeen hundred different plant species so far recorded.

To drive in Greece, you will need your drivers license, car registration papers and insurance documentation for your car. Vehicle rental companies, of course, provide the last two for car rentals, keep them with you.
