Venice (Venezia)

Originally built on mud banks in a lagoon, Venice uses canals instead of roads to allow people to get around the city. There are plenty of places to walk, bridges to cross, ferries, water taxis and gondolas to get around the city, it is these features that have made Venice different from all other cities.

It was the wealthiest city state in Europe from the 12th to the 18th Century, when its power began to wane. It controlled the Europe spice and silk trade, until nations had ships that could just go and get them without needing Venice.

The magnificent buildings and palaces you see in Venice were built during in this time, including St. Mark’s Basilica and Doge’s Palace at the Piazza San Marco.

Behind the great altar is a magnificent work, an altarpiece comprised of 250 panels of gold, jewels and enamels.

Home to the ruler of Venice (doge) and the seat of the government, this palace was built from white limestone and pink Veronese marble above a portico of white Istrian stone. The interior houses a chambers and halls detailed with impressive designs and artworks, as well as an enormous courtyard. There is even a torture chamber where prisoners were ’questioned’.
