Thy NP was the first National Park to be declared in Denmark. Located on the west coast of Jutland, it covers some 244 square kilometres. An important resting place for huge flocks of seabirds, it has beautiful beaches, historic Bronze Age sites as well German bunkers from WWII. Complete with wind swept dunes and beaches, its a great place for families and other visitors to explore Denmark’s unique landscapes and nature.
In Randers, you can visit the only Elvis museum located outside of the United States: Graceland Randers. Other attractions located in the city are the Randers Rain Forest, three rain forests with over 250 animal species and a whole host of tropical plants and trees. The city also has Djurs Sommerland, the biggest theme park in Schandinavia. Other attractions in Randers include the Mariager Saltcenter, the Artisan Museum and the Museum Østjylland, dedicated to cultural history.
Herning: This Danish city, located on the Jutland peninsula has beaches to enjoy in the summer. Other attractions include the Herning Museum of Contemporary Art, the Jyllands Park Zoo, Præstbjerg Naturcenter, Baboon City and the Carl-Henning Pedersen & Else Alfelts Museum.
Viborg: One of the oldest towns in Denmark, its early kings were proclaimed here. Viborg Cathedral is the most notable landmark, its crypt and walls are covered with art from Joakim Skovgaard. Other attractions are the Borgvold, a beautiful park while the Bibelhaven has plants and bushes named in the Old and New Testaments.
Aarhus: The region was occupied by Vikings from at least 900 A.D., making it the oldest major city in the country. An interesting place to visit is the Old Town, with medieval buildings from all over Denmark, not just Aarhus. Museums here include the large ARoS, dedicated to contemporary art and the Frihedsmuseet, a museum about the Danish resistance in WWII. Feminism is celebrated at the Kvindemuseet, showing its influence in history and culture.
